This is Santa Fe based sculptor Debra Baxter’s third solo show at Roq La Rue. Known for her mixed media sculptures than investigate the cross section of femininity, vulnerability, and a punk rock streak of toughness, her new show Ascent portrays woman mystics who have experienced direct, vivid connection with the divine through meditation and ecstatic visions. This show was particularly inspired by the artists studying woman mystics in the 1400’s, their impact on history, as well as considering modern mystics that are alive now and how they appear in our increasingly splintered and divisive world.
Baxter originally started creating works for this show in 2021. However in January 2022, Baxter contracted covid that became long covid. This rendered her incapable of the prodigious workload that had informed her career before. The surprising blessing (according to the artist) of this recovery period was that because Baxter had to rest an exorbitant amount of time, she started receiving visions, collapsing the space between this side and the other. Life had a certain amount of permeability in a more spiritual and profound way than before and she began to feel as if she started to embody the mystical concepts she had been researching. This created a new direction for her show- the results seen here in Ascent, rendered in alabaster, bronze,steel and crystal.
The women depicted in these sculptures are trying to maintain higher consciousness, but keep fracturing and falling apart . They stem from my love of the history of sculptures from Greek busts to Bernini, and my interest in the innate truth of materials, and my ongoing belief in the power and intuition of woman. - Debra Baxter
