Roq
La Rue is pleased to present a new show by Shag
aka joSH AGle. Shag's
massive popularity is largely due to his immediately recognizable
'cartoon cubist' style, a mish-mash of Lounge and Exotica culture
that owes more to Jim Flora than Kustom Kulture.
Shag
is a product of the sprawling suburbs of Los Angeles, California.
He was born a little too late to experience the culture and
styles which have always fascinated him and are present in most
of his illustration and painting. Shag
is intrigued with the slick commercial art and advertising of
the late 50s and early 60s and he strives for a tight, clean
and well crafted appearance to his work. Though he considers
himself more an illustrator than a "fine artist," galleries
in the United States, Europe, Australia and Japan have hosted
solo exhibitions of his art.

Whether
the setting is a tiki bar, 60s style lounge, or perhaps a Jet
Set cocktail party, Shag populates
his painting with heavy-lidded vixens, suave lounge lizards, or
Bond-like arch villains, all of whom are probably up to something
naughty. While undeniably ubiquitous, Shag's
work manages to stay fresh because of the fact he nails his subject
matter every time... there's no sense of disingenuousness in his
style and the subjects he pays homage to. There is a story in
each painting as well, usually a bit sinister in a playful way,
and always humorous.
For
this show, Shag has created
6 new paintings, this time taking references to "Blaxploitation"
films out for a spin. He will also be opening the archives and
showing approximately 35 prints, all of which are from sold out
editions.
