Modern
Pin Up Art, meaning the scantily clad depictions of female pulchritude,
can be traced back to the close of the 19th Century, when the
staunch Victorian era morals of the time started to weaken. At
this time everything from calendars to magazines to posters (a
newly evolving art form at the time) began to realize they could
captivate viewers with illustrations of beautiful carefree women
(such as the Gibson Girl, considered provocative at the time,
or Toulouse Lautrecs Demi Monde beauties).

The
real Golden Age of Pin Up art however, was in the 30s, 40s
and 50s, when sassy ladies in revealing ensembles (sometimes
nothing but a strategically placed slip of cloth and a big smile)
really hit their stride, and these gals graced everything from lurid
pulp magazines to the nose cones of bombers during
World War 2.

|
In
the mid nineties a new wave of interest of vintage pin up art
occurred, fueled by the retro cocktail culture resurgence,
and the rediscovery of Pin Up goddess Bettie Page, whose iconic
black hair, bright smile, and racy bondage photographs were inspiring
to almost all the current countercultural scenes, from Rockabilly
to S&M, and directly influenced the burgeoning burlesque scene.
New artists started experimenting with the subject and a new wave
of alternative Pin Up art was born.
The
Pin Up Show features some of the best artists working in the genre.
