"Communicable Contradictions"
|
~Roq
la Rue Gallery~
is very pleased to present a show of new work by Mark
Mothersbaugh. Perhaps best known as the front man for
legendary new wave art band DEVO, Mark started his career as a
visual artist after receiving his first pair of glasses as a child
(when it was discovered that he was extremely nearsighted and
legally blind!)
|
| Mark's
early work juxtaposed many types of media such as rubber stamp designs,
ink illustrations, screen printing, and mail art. During DEVO's
worldwide tours, Mark began making art postcards to send to his
friends. As personal diaries rather than aspiring to any high art
aesthetic- the work was deeply personal and free to be as sordid
or as weird as he liked. Later, he began exhibiting the results
of his free form art making in gallery shows in the 80's and 90's
to much acclaim. After Mark's career as a film composer took off
(his company, Mutato Muzika, has scored movies such as "The Royal
Tennenbaums", " Rushmore", "Welcome To Collinwood" and "Rugrats-The
Movie" as well as countless commercials) Mark was unable to exhibit
his art due to a hectic schedule. This show is part of a hugely
successful nationwide tour he undertook this year to show his latest
works. |
|
Mark
has continued to create these postcard pieces for over 30 years,
on a daily basis. Viewing these pieces, which are inspired by
personal experiences and thoughts, ranging from sublime to controversial,
give the viewer both the thrill of "spying" into another's thoughts,
as well as the refreshing sensation of looking at work that caters
to no art movement, no aesthetic, except the artists own.

"Sweet
Potato Showerhead"
|
Mark
keeps his originals, but makes extremely limited edition prints
(editions of 2-10 normally) which he often paints over or alters
in some way. These prints are very affordable so that even the most
financially challenged are able to afford Mark's work. The gallery
will have 25-30 framed prints, and will also be offering a special
limited edition silkscreen print published by and available only
at Roq la Rue. |
