For April, Roq La Rue is pleased to present a show by two dazzlingly talented emerging artists, Mona Superhero and Donovan Crosby.

"High Class Butchers"
by Mona Superhero

Mona Superhero is a rapidly rising young artist who creates fantastical "paintings" created entirely with intricate, obsessively carved and layered pieces of multi-colored utility tape on white melamine. Evoking psychedelic rock posters, pin ball machine graphics, and 60's avant-garde Japanese poster design, Superhero's work straddles the concept of "Highbrow" and "Lowbrow" with a reverence for spectacle as well as an unwaverable dedication to her own imagination and taste.

These images serve to essentially capture the artist's terror of everyday existence, meditatively encapsulating existential angst into a bright shrine of beautiful and dynamic images.

Superhero's paintings have been flying off the walls whenever she exhibits in her hometown of Portland, and we are thrilled to have her fantastic work here in Seattle.

Los Angeles artist Donovan Crosby graduated from Cal Arts in 1997 and has since done work for selected group exhibitions and animation studios. Most recently she exhibited her work in Los Angeles for her first major show, "Risen", that included a new body of work dealing with voodoo folklore as well as a group show in Philadelphia this past January.

With a unique brush technique that lends a tactile and luscious quality to her paintings, Crosby combines animation-style imagery with a classic touch to create intriguingly deviant characters and interesting worlds.

Chris Barns from the Los Angeles Times describes Crosby's work: "Surrounded by grand wood frames, her gauzy images take on an air of antiquity, as if they might adorn the walls of a New Orleans mortician." Her new paintings carry this theme as well as expanding into territory of fairytale motifs.
