Roq
la Rue is very pleased to present a show of new works by
two of the foremost up and coming talents in the Pop Surrealist/Lowbrow
movement - Marion Peck and Camille Rose Garcia.
Initially seeming wildly disparate in style, the artists are akin
in that their work is imbued with incredible depth - both in subject
matter, and in the layering techniques used to create the paintings
themselves. Both also mine the "uncomfortable" (personal psyche/man's
destructive tendencies) in order to create their work. This show
is not to be missed!

"Kittens"
by Marion Peck
|
Marion
Peck
is a well established painter in the Northwest, earning accolades
for the 10+ years she has been exhibiting in galleries locally
and elsewhere. Both narrative and dream inspired, she creates
work that could be described as a more grounded sort of surrealism,
comparable to the work of Donald Roller Wilson, Odd Nerdrum,
and Mark Ryden. Marion's most recent series of paintings exhibit
a more playful feel than her previous work, and are indicative
of a more in-depth analysis of her inner life and its new directions.
Jewel-toned flowers and verdant greenery burst from her paintings
now, and the stories the paintings tell are more vibrant and
complex.

Even
a seemingly offhand, creamy portrait of kittens gazing benignly
from a basket reveals a third eye on each kitten, raising a host
of interesting questions for the viewer. Infused with a new countercultural
pop tone and a brighter color palette, the paintings still convey
a sense of the murky, yet magical, corners of the subconscious
- enigmatic, sensual, and endlessly fascinating.

"Still
Life " by Marion Peck
|
|
Marion
has exhibited her work in Rome, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco,
and Seattle. Her paintings are in the collections of Danny Elfman,
Gary Larson, Mark Ryden, and many other private collectors in
the United States and Europe. For this show, Marion will have
approximately 10 new paintings, as well as a catalog, and a limited
edition print. This is her first show at Roq la Rue and we are
thrilled to have her.

"Night Factory"
by Camille Rose Garcia
|
Los
Angeles artist Camille Rose Garcia is quickly
gaining international interest for her exceptionally
unique work. Creating paintings using layers of
drippy paint, ink, torn papers, black glitter,
and varnishes, Camille creates a world of candy
and flesh-colored gloss mixed with decay and ruin.
She then populates this world with big eyed animals
damaged from years of environmental pollution,
sinister centipede-like villains, and Gothy little
flapper girls that seem to recall both the early
era of cartoon characters and the Victorian ensembles
of Edward Gorey.
In
this world, it's often unclear who is bad and
who is good, and Camille uses this self-created
world to make statements on mass consumer culture,
environmental ruin, and the retreat to fantasy
when the world becomes too much to bear, significant
in our post 9/11 culture. Occasionally referred
to as "comic," Camille's work transcends the merely
narrative and becomes deeply meaningful, dark,
and exhilarating to look at.

|
For
this show of 20+ paintings and drawings, Camille
will focus on the apocalyptic landscapes of modern
life, lost deer, raining oil slicks, displaced
humans, and pharmaceutical fixations. In addition,
she will be painting a large background mural
in the gallery!
