| Roq
la Rue is pleased to present "The Devil's Hobby Hut" featuring
recent work by two of America's most accomplished and provocative
artists -- Charles Krafft and
Frank Kozik. |
|
Charles
Krafft is familiar to Northwest audiences, having exhibited
widely throughout the region for nearly four decades. A self taught
painter and ceramicist, Krafft is now best known for his Disaterware
plates, porcelain weaponry, and SPONE reliquaries made of
human bone china, which have been exhibited in galleries and museums
throughout North America and Europe. This exhibition will focus
on new works created during a residency last fall at the European
Ceramic Work Centre (EKWC) in Hertogenbosch, Netherlands. Appropriating
motifs associated with Delft souvenirs, Krafft created a series
of cow creamers, windmills, ashtrays and vases, employing his
signature style of Satanic irony. "The Dutch are very proud
of their ceramics tradition and weren't thrilled with the way
I play with it," the artist reveals in the current issue
of Coagula arts journal. The work went over well, however, during
its debut at the Copro Nason Gallery in Los Angeles in June. "The
Devil's Hobby Hut" will also include new pieces created at
his studio in Seattle, which pay homage to the imagery of his
co-exhibitor, Frank Kozik.

Frank
Kozik
was born in Madrid, Spain in 1962. At the age of 14, he moved
to the United States and settled in Austin, Texas. Credited with
single handedly reviving the "lost" art of the concert
poster, Kozik's creative career grew largely out of his enthusiasm
for Austin's growing alternative rock scene in the mid-eighties.
Starting with black and white flyers for friends' bands posted
on telephone polls, his reputation rapidly grew as an artist whose
work was graphically compelling as well as culturally gripping.
He has designed hundreds of full-color, limited edition, silk-screened
posters for such renowned artists as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, The Red
Hot Chili Peppers and The Beastie Boys. He has also been the subject
of many magazine articles including Newsweek, Rolling Stone, Spin,
and Details. His contribution to "The Devil's Hobby Hut"
will feature an installation of 100 evil Kozik designed Japanese
"Dunnies" (robot-like toys), as well as recent works
on paper. Currently based in San Francisco, Kozik's poster art
will figure prominently in "The Art of Modern Rock"
exhibition at Bumbershoot over Labor Day weekend.
This
exhibit will feature a large toy installation by Kozik as well
as other assorted ephemera.
