For our first show of 2004, Roq
la Rue
is very pleased to present "Jewelbox" - a show of exquisite, intricate,
and brightly hued paintings by three artists: Yumiko Kayukawa (Sapporo,
Japan), Kipling West (Seattle, WA), and Andrew Brandou who also goes
by the moniker, Howdy Pardner (Los Angeles, CA).
"Rock
Me Baby"
by Yumiko Kayukawa

Gallery
regular Yumiko Kayukawa shows ten
new paintings exploring visual puns using her personal iconography
of lithe and enigmatic girls, animal compatriots, and traditional
Japanese floral patterns and kanji characters.
Yumiko's
work has been called 'sagacious Japanese tradition in synergy
with the jubilant irreverence of American pop culture' and combines
her deep childhood connection to nature with her later love
of good old rock'n'roll.
Despite
showing in galleries (most recently in LA and San Francisco)
for only a few years, demand for Yumiko's work is high and her
shows tend to sell out by opening night. She
is currently profiled in the new Juxtapoz art magazine
and her work appears on the cover for the new lifestyle magazine
Vodka.

Kipling
West is a local artist who has carved a space for herself
in the local art scene both as an artist and a curator. Her work
is often quite sweet while retaining a playfully dark tone, reminiscent
of vintage Halloween toys dropped into a technicolor world.
Influenced
by everything from 20's advertising imagery to tarot cards, Tim
Burton to 70's toys, her work is rendered in a distinctive style,
with bold, sensuous linework combined with a muted jewel tone
palette.

Andrew
Brandou
uses the moniker "Howdy Pardner" when showing his paintings in
galleries. A very accomplished commercial artist (he just finished
animation work on the Henry Darger documentary that recently screened
at Sundance), Brandou's fine art is catching up in popularity.
His
last show at Roq la Rue ("A Sweet Sickness") sold out within an
hour of the doors opening!
Andrew
will be showing two series of works in this show. The
first is a delightful take on wildlife illustration, entitled
"After Audubon". These are ink drawings tinted with watercolor
to mimic Audubon's etchings (which were done after paintings).
Greatly inspired by the popular Japanese "Fruits" magazine in
which fashion-forward youth have their outlandish costumes or
'plumage' documented, Andrew dresses his animal subjects in exact
replicas of costumes found in the fashion tome and then drops
in characters based on his own collection of pop detritus, namely
vinyl figures and toys.
The
second series is modeled on children's book illustrations of the
40's-60's (particularly Little Golden Books) gone awry.
