Outlaw Glass by Northwest Artists

June 6 - July 3, 2003

Roq La Rue presents a group show this June by artists who all work with glass. Particularly in the Northwest, glass art has both public admiration as well as a stigma attached to it. Most glass art is seen by some as being either too "duck-in-bonnet" (dainty figurines), or as not even being an art at all. We beg to differ.

If you think you don't like glass art - think again!

The medium of glass can be used for good or evil - depending on its application. And quite frankly, if you really think about it, glass is one seriously bad ass art! Far from being a twee craft, glass making is actually one of the more macho arts around - from the giant furnaces, to the handling of molten hot materials, to the constant vigilance required to create a work out of glass.

For the Glass Art Society (GAS) Conference being held in Seattle this month, we assembled our favorite artists working in glass, and naturally created a show conducive to the gallery's vision. No Chihuly knockoff's here! Rather, subjects range from the tattoo flash inspired pieces by Kelly and Nanda Soderberg (mounted on glitter vinyl or low-rider upholstery) to Jackie Mendelson's naughtily organic spiky lamps, to Lon Clark's dark fetish inspired work, to Bill Akers' candy-colored vessels pinstriped by tattooist Hubba Floughton.
