Opening Night: Friday November 9th 6-9pm (runs through Dec. 1st) |
Brian Despain |
We have a fantastic show for you this month with a show by three |
| Scott Musgrove is one of the top tier artists of the Pop Surrealism movement. His work focuses on a fictional landscape populated by extinct impossible creatures. Evoking Victoria era "wunderkammer" museum displays, Scott's work is often graced by identifying species nameplates and encased in aged frames. For this show he has a small collection housed in antique union photograph cases, placed in specially built shelf and lucite cases. The contrast between the antique housing and the cartoonish appeal of his pop eyed, squirmy creatures takes the viewer into a fantastical realm while echoing today's issues with rapidly disappearing wildlife from our world. |
Brian Despain also
works with imaginary landscapes but populates his world with seemingly
self aware and melancholy robots. His work blends the natural world
with technology with a slightly morbid slant. Skulls, machinery, and
birds provide the forefront for a seemingly arcane number system the
artist employs in all his work. |
| Ryan Heshka upapologetically pays homage to Golden Era sci fi pulp while creating a style that is also uniquely his own. For this series he explores further his themes of man vs nature, in this case the "nature" is from another world. This new series (including his largest paintings to date) is influenced by WW2 era propaganda posters, which demonized the enemy into an cartoonish and evil cartoon. Is this case, the "enemy" really is an alien threat! |
