Opening night reception September 2nd 6-9pm

Roq La Rue is pleased to present a small show of new paintings by Scotland based painter Lindsey Carr. Known for her hyper ornate portraits of wildlife combined with mix of maximalist ornamentation and geometric and Victorian natural history references- for this show she has changed tack and created a series of striking botanical portraiture. Influenced by 17th century Dutch tulip paintings, Carr recreates the same dedicated craftsmanship of the old masters but with a surrealistic, carnivalesque spin. Stretched and distorted and in various states of translucency, Carr creates floral portraiture that is both botanically lush and atmospherically stark at the same time.

“I work primarily as a traditional artist, specializing in watercolors and oils. My professional background though, lies in programming, with several years spent in Machine Learning. Around 2019, I started experimenting with blending art and technology. This led to me creating source references for oil paintings by programmatically manipulating historical art data. I focused specifically on female still life painters from the 17th & 18th centuries. This began out of necessity - while female painters are sorely underrepresented in the historical art canon, it should come as little surprise that they are better represented within the botanical arts. It's clear that social and other implicit rules limited the subject matter of these artists. I've become more and more interested in this idea that art is not some product of the individual genius, but an emergent property of the implicit and explicit rules that surround the artist, and therefore the art. In this series of paintings all of my source references are generated by rules of some form, mainly programmatic, but also in the choice of colours and compositions. I like the feeling that I'm not 'in control' of every aspect, that there is some collaboration with chance involved.” - Lindsey Carr
