Roq La Rue is pleased to present a solo show of incredible new paintings by Josie Morway centered around the theme of "Refuge".

Morway’s astonishing magical-hyper-realist paintings almost shock the viewer with their technical virtuoso as well as the poignant and compelling imagery contained within. While her work focuses mainly on animals, particularly birds, as subject matter- the hand of the anthropocene lays heavy, speaking about the effects humans have on nature. The images are composed with an almost religious reverence but often backed by fuzzy color fields inspired by forest wildfires. A perfectly rendered bird with each feather perfectly detailed, may also contain a unusual pop of color or gold gilt detail…a surrealistic note to the discordant nature man has with and made an effect upon the wild.
In this new show, Morway juxtaposes her vibrant, lushly detailed and vital creatures with static statuary depicting famous celebrated and notorious humans. A dominating theme throughout the works is the idea of refuge for all living things. This concept becomes more elusive as climate change threatens our fixed concepts of place and history, and especially of what we value, honor, and memorialize, and how these ideas are ripe for change and redefinition.

Sadly we will not have a physical opening night party for the show because of Covid restrictions. The show will be available online as well as in person visits during our opening hours.
