Roq La Rue is pleased to present a group show revolving around the theme "Death and the Maiden". This theme, of a young girl in an embrace with a skeleton has been an artistic inspiration from the ancient greek myth (with the story of Persephone and Hades), to a blossoming of imagery during the Renaissance and a resurgence during the Romantic Period, down to modern times. Like "Vanitas" still life images, the subject is meant as a reminder of the finite time one has on earth, however the "Danse Macabre" motif used between the young woman and wizened corpse or skeleton added a strange erotic charge.
For this show, we asked several contemporary artists to see this theme through their own lens. The results have been beautiful and moving, with some artists channeling personal events such as the death of a mother, or of a child. Others have incorporated a more subtle element, not showing the maiden or a skeleton at all, but rather hinting at some potential action that leads the maiden to an encounter with a premature end.
