From his artist statement:

The “Abstract-Figurative” series, which includes the “ManFungus Series” and “Cathartes Series” are centered on the concept of “abstract-figurative” which describes both the process and result of my painting technique. All of my work fluctuates between the poles of abstraction and figuration; the truth of the paint film and the illusion of the image; the personal and the archetypal. Technically speaking, when I paint, draw or sculpt I intentionally make marks and motions that are aesthetically uncomfortable and counter-intuitive to produce imagery that is obscure or abstract. By rendering form from this abstraction or obscurity, the image grows into a chimera or grotesque self-portrait, composed of many quasi-realistic forms reminiscent of various flora and fauna; a reflection of one’s self in many forms. Recently, I have been practicing this process within the convention of portraiture and drawing influences from artists such as Guiseppe Arcimboldo and Rembrandt van Rijn, who used the viewer/sitter dynamic to express their own notions of personal and collective identity. By rendering form from abstraction and presenting various biomorphic forms within the context of portraiture, the viewer/sitter dynamic of portraiture is destabilized and we begin to see personal identity in a new visual context.
