The gallery is thrilled to welcome back Dutch painter Femke Hiemstra for her first solo show at both the gallery and in the US since 2016.
The artist's work is highly sought after for its meticulous, jewel like renderings of fantastical fairy tale-esque narratives that often reference everyday trials and tribulations. Her work often contains sly puns and humor, but its technical excellence and darker, old world influences keep it from falling into "whimsy".
This show explores the artists forays and frustration with seeking romantic "love" in general and in her own life, and the reasons it's "beyond her control" (stated with a broad wink to the viewer). She quotes from the Ella Fitzgerald song "I Am In Love" :
Such conflicting questions rise
Around in my brain
Should I order cynanide
Or order champagne?
